Virtual Cooking Class – Daifuku (Sept 2)

Join the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme Alumni Association of Ottawa for a virtual cook-along cooking class. We’ll be making daifuku, or anko filled mochi – sweet bean paste filled gluttonous rice. Pick your favourite bean paste, some strawberries if you like, and follow along in your own kitchen.

What ingredients do I need?
Mochi: 115 g (¾ cup) mochiko glutinous rice flour 50 g (¼ cup) granulated sugar 180 ml (¾ cup) water
Filling: 480 g (1 ½ cup) anko red bean paste (optional) 10 – 15 strawberries For shaping: 1 cup or more cornstarch

There’s a few kinds of anko (bean paste) – which should I use?
That’s up to you! Koshi-an is smooth red bean paste. Tsubo-an is chunky. Shiro-an is white bean paste. The event picture is shiro-an strawberry daifuku.

What equipment do I need?
Microwave safe bowl
Mixing spoon or rice paddle
Saran wrap
Measuring cups and spoons
Plates (Optional)
Cookie sheet and parchment/silicon mat

SHODO WORKSHOP (Aug 28)

Follow along with us on Monday, September 28th for our 4th workshop on shodo with sensei Johanne Léveillé! Ms. Léveillé started practicing shodo in 1985 while living in Japan. She received a teaching certificate from Tokyo Daito Shogakuin (東京大東署学院). She is now based in Ottawa where she has participated in several exhibitions, including at the Embassy of Japan.

Description: Are you a JET alumnus? We want to celebrate with you! The Embassy of Japan is hosting a reception to celebrate 35 years of the JET Programme in Canada as well as 95 years of Japan-Canada relations on the occasion of the JET Alumni Association’s yearly Canada Conference taking place in Ottawa. Come enjoy the reception with other former JET participants, members of the Japanese-Canadian community, and others who make the JET Programme possible in Canada every year.

JETAA Ottawa Hanami – May 21

JETAA Ottawa will be hosting a hanami picnic in The Dominion Arboretum at the Central Experimental Farm! Be sure to bring some snacks and a picnic blanket and enjoy the beauty of the apple blossoms around us! 

JETAA Ottawa will be hosting a hanami picnic in The Dominion Arboretum at the Central Experimental Farm, Sunday, May 21st**, from 1PM onwards! Bring a blanket your bento and hang out under the apple blossoms to enjoy the spring weather and catch up with your fellow JETAA, MEXT and other friends of our organization who have worked/lived in Japan.
